Seaworthy Ideas and Stuff
It’s Summer! I write that in the same frame of mind that I say, on the last day of the workweek, “it’s Friday!” After all, to me it means the same thing. All the crummy things that have happened up to now are going away. In just a little while, I will be free. No clock to watch and no people to please except myself, and those that I really care about. Summer, the equal of a long awaited for weekend. It‘s here and it’s gonna be around for a while. As a sailor, this is the time that I can truly live on the wind and go where it takes me. Damn the telephone, faxes and meetings, I’m alive and independent in my thinking.
Soon, I will be on vacation and free of the burdens of the workweek. So everyone, Happy Summer and many more to you all.
Speaking of summer, many of us have endured one of the Rights of Summer. The Mayfly (the Fishfly to us around here) has made it’s appearance like we haven’t seen in quite a while. The lake water quality is up and thus so is the Fishfly bloom. We may be seeing blooms all summer long. After all, there are 1500 species and Trout, well, they love them all. How many species do we have here? I can't say for sure but, there’s no less then five fingers of count by what I hear. Fishing lures have been patterned after them for 400 years.
Here’s the quick review of their life span: after living in the water as nymphs breathing through gills for one to three years eating microscopic plants, they rise to the water surface and molt into the flying insect. They are unable to feed so they form large swarms to mate.
The males die after mating and leave the females to deposit the eggs within a few hours in the water. After the deposit, the females die and we are left with the entire smelly mess.
Another Right of Summer approaching: Duck Weed. More on that perhaps, later. Enjoy.
That’s it for now. Casting off all lines. Color me gone.

The summer is off to a fabulous start and we already have some fun cruises under our belts. Thanks to Ken & Sandy Bousum for another great cruise to Windsor. Larry & Kathy Caricchio outdid themselves at Metro with their creativity, and remember the pancakes at Radlin’s courtesy Creeds, Lundys and Wings. Don’t miss out on the rest of our summer fun! If you haven’t signed up already, give me a call. I’m sure we can make arrangements.
