Commodore's Corner
Nan Suydam

We were pleased to see such a nice turnout for the International Race and the picnic that followed. I heard the winds were pretty light, but as usual, a fun time was had by all. Wasn't the food good this year? I had heard what a great chef North Star had hired. Nice job Mike!

Are you aware that Erv made the flags given at the picnic? His daughter started them but didn't have time to complete them before heading back to school. Erv is not only a whiz with the computer, but quite a seamstress as well. What would we do without him?

Our Social Chairman was given a vigorous round of applause when he announced that the Commodore's Ball would take place, once again, at the Thomas Edison Inn. Mike will need some help, especially with the door prizes. We'll discuss it at the November Meeting.

We are in need of a new club banner. Cheryl Wolohan made the one we have and did a great job. Unfortunately, time, sun, and wind have taken their toll. We will discuss quotes on a new banner in November. Hopefully you will see one at the Commodore's Ball.

Have you seen the new sweatshirts? The second order has been placed. I would like to deliver them at the November meeting. If you would like yours before that, call me and we'll make arrangements.

It has become apparent that we need to raise the club dues. It was voted on at the meeting to place a ballot in this newsletter so we can have a quorum vote on this issue. So please have your say and vote yea or nay.

We hope to see all of you at the next meeting. Among other things, we need to elect next year's board. To put your mind at ease, the positions already have volunteers. So if you haven't volunteered for anything at this point, you're safe. I know Mike has thoughts about some great homemade desserts. So come and visit, indulge in a sweet or two, and get your sweatshirt.

LAKE ERIE CRUISE - JULY 1999
Doug Post

At the General meeting, following the International Regatta, a Lake Erie cruise was suggested. This is just a suggested plan and any input would be greatly appreciated. The week could change if people wanted to go earlier or later.

SATURDAY JULY 17,1999: leave CR1 @ 09:00 am and sail/motor to Boblo Island. Approx. 534 miles. Arrive about 3:30 PM. Spend Saturday night at Boblo - go on the roller coaster. (Just Kidding)

SUNDAY MORNING depart for Put-IN-Bay, planning to arrive just as all of the weekenders have left. Approx. 40 miles. Spend Sunday afternoon, night, Monday, and Monday night in the bay.

TUESDAY MORNING depart for Cedar Point, Approx. 20 miles. Now we ride the roller coaster! Spend Tuesday night, Wednesday, and Wednesday night at Cedar Point.

THURSDAY MORNING depart for Boblo Island - long trip - early start. Approx. 55 miles, depending on route. Spend Thursday night at Boblo or maybe anchor out for a night.

FRIDAY MORNING depart for Windsor - Lakeview Marina - arrive late afternoon. Approx. 20 miles. Spend Friday night in Windsor.

At Windsor we could spend an extra night, we could be joined by CRCA weekend cruisers, or we could need a weather day and not have an extra day/night. Once here we can do whatever - spend all our left over money at the casino.

This is just a plan, for those of you with an urge to sail/cruise beyond Lake St. Clair, and would prefer to do it with a group (sail I mean) to get out of the little lake and go to the big one. Dates and itinerary are tentative. Please call if you might be interested in going or if you have suggestions / comments / questions.

Let's go show the CRCA flag on Lake Erie. On a personal note - I will be wrapping up 2 years as CRCA secretary after the November Meeting - It's a pretty easy job, was a lot of fun, and it didn't take a lot of time. I did not know what I was doing when I started, but I learned. So don't be afraid to volunteer, it's fun.

See Ya!

With the completion of the Fall Series and the International Regatta, the CRCA racing season comes to an end. We had a very good year, weatherwise, with one "drifter" and one race postponed due to thunderstorms. Thanks for coming out on Thursdays. I hope everyone had as great a time as I did. If you have any comments or suggestions, please send then to me.  See you all at the Commodore's Ball! - EEZ

DETROIT CATALINA CUP RACE
Doug Post

The Season's Last Regatta?

Hi!
Just thought I'd send you a report on the "other" Catalina Club's activities.
The Detroit Catalina Yachting Association's annual regatta, "The Catalina Cup", was held on Saturday, Sept. 26, on the course off the Nautical Mile. The day started with winds of 12 to 15 and built to about 20 by mid afternoon. There were 2 races (5.2 miles & 6.5 miles) with 3 starts that were well organized and well executed by the DCYA Race Chairman, Chris Licavoli. The CRCA was well represented (7 boats attended) and a total of 14 boats participated There was a party at the chairman's house after the races and I believe everybody had a good time. I know I did, and am looking forward to going back next year. Hope to see you there.
RESULTS

1st Start - 320s, 30s, & 28s
   1) Resolute
   2) Serenity

FROM THE POOP DECK
SEAWORTHY IDEAS & STUFF
Paul Kurkowski

Ahoy mates, happy fall. The weather is cool. The sailing is great and the snow isn't far away. I had a wonderful time at the International Regatta and the association meeting that followed. Some important issues and calls for votes were handled. No doubt about it, the CRCA is moving ahead. I even had a few good belly laughs and, the non-members too that were there appeared to be enjoying the activities. The barbecued food, prepared by Chef Doug Molzon of Creative Cuisine, hit the hunger spot right on the button. Oh yeah, the weather was darn nice.

What's new, you might ask? Well lots, I must reply, but Monica has had way too much press. I hear she is a sailor. She's been xxxxxx xxx xxxx x xxx xxxxx. (Barb, I know you won't print that.)

Boat Show USA was a shock. They actually had sailboats right there. Both new and used, for sale right there on the spot. Some other people too, finally realized that there must be money in sailboats. Our guys at Sun & Sail did a nice job. I hope some new Catalinas and their owners drop anchor at the CRCA. It's only getting better folks. Chris Conolly knows. Stop by one of our meetings and see for yourself.

Ford Motor Company is aiding the design for the America's Cup quest in the year 2000 for the AmericaOne syndicate. H'm, did General Motors lose face after the last race? I haven't heard that they were helping again. I sure remember a lot of Cadillac commercials and oh, that's right, we lost! I should, in all fairness, mention Chrysler, but they're probably too busy Benzing to make ends meet.

More still on AC news: Bayview and Detroit Yacht Clubs are signed up as sponsors with PACT 2000. North Star Sail Club has hitched their painter to, one time member, Dawn Riley's America. Remember Mighty Mary in 1992? Well, good luck to all. New Zealand will be tough. They're wolves in sheep's clothing surrounded by salt water.

I read an interesting piece in the Macomb Daily (9/24/98) on Conger and Belvidere Bays. It seems that James Conger, a liver tonic entrepreneur, married Paulina Belvidere Clark. James started to build a city in her name at the end of North River Roar, now Venice Shores. The city was doomed. Even an old Chipewa Indian chief foresaw the downfall. He was quoted to say, "No can stay. Water come high, wash away. Almost time. Every 35 years. Always come." In the time period of 1836-1838 the water rose six feet. I can say no more than, "let's do some math!" 5 x 35 = 175 and 175 + 1836 = 2011. Good, we're safe for a little while.

For those who haven't heard, the LORAN system has had a temporary stay of execution. Originally to be operated and maintained by the Coast Guard until 2015, then marked for shutdown as early as 2000, is now budgeted to keep going until 2008. A lot of reasons were given, but the Feds discovered that it would cost more to shut it down than to maintain it.

One last thing. The Around Alone solo yacht race, formerly known as the BOC (British Ocean Challenge), started on Saturday the 26th of September. In eight months and 26,000 miles it'll be over.

Well that's it for now. Casting off all lines. Color me gone.
