The race began under cloudy but not
threatening skies. The Committee boat was manned by Jack Creed and crew as race
chairman, Doug Post, was ill.
7 boats participated. Three
were out just having “Fun”. The other four included a gang of south of the
border Banditos, the entire crew of the “SS Minnow” including Gilligan, a group
of wild hockey fans and the crew of the Beatles “Yellow Submarine”.
After a good start, boats rounded the
first mark in a group and proceeded in a close hauled rune to mark number 2.
Just as that mark was rounded by most boats, all boats received a warning that
there was a heavy squall coming. The skies now threatened. The race was called,
sails furled and the fleet retired, just a bit soggy, to the dock.
The picnic was favored with mostly
sunshine and was well attended. Race participants dried out nicely. A general
membership meeting followed, race prizes were awarded and the 50/50 drawing was
held. Food was great, talk was exhilarating, two new member families were
introduced and a “FUN” time was had by all.
